Described as “a voice to watch out for” by CBC’s Bill Richardson, Joseph Glaser’s music creates space for performers and audiences alike to have out-of-the-ordinary experiences. Joseph’s compositional work addresses the performer’s body as an intrinsic part of the compositional process creating works that are as much about the actions required to play them as they are about sound. This involves cross disciplinary collaborations with dancers, poets, theatre artists, and illustrators, creating works that exist between the boundaries of these disciplines. For Joseph, context matters: a piece cannot be placed in any random setting nor be in relation to a random audience and reproduce a predictable set of outcomes. What variables change, how do we change as artists/interpreters, and who gathers to take part?

A graduate of McGill University where he studied with Jean Lesage, his thesis explored the relationship between dance theory and music performance. Joseph also holds a degree from the University of British Columbia where he studied with Jocelyn Morlock, Dorothy Chang, Keith Hamel and Stephen Chatman.

Joseph has had his works performed across the country in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. Notable performances include a one-act opera developed with FAWN Chamber Creative, presentations by Din of Shadows, Codes D’accès and the Museum of Jewish Montreal, premieres by India Gailey, Alex Tibbitts, Bakarlari, McGill Contemporary Music Ensemble under Guillaume Bourgogne, among others. Joseph’s work Joinery is featured on cellist India Gailey’s release Problematica on People Places Records. In 2017 Joseph founded the experimental music collective Ear Camera and served on the boards of Codes D’acces and the Montreal Contemporary Music Lab. Joseph is currently the Director of the Ontario Region of the Canadian Music Centre, the music director of the experimental Jewish theatre troupe Michegas Theatre, and the founder of the devised music collective Not Birds.
