Carré Rouge
for string quartet

2014/2016
8:30
string quartet, violin, viola, ‘cello
Inspired by both the 2012 “Red Square” student protests in Quebec and Kazimir Malevich’s Red Square (1915). This piece requires the ensemble to play together in an extremely tight way, to the point where their breathing is coordinated, in a nod to the totalizing ideals of Malevich’s Suprematist art movement. Through the course of the piece, this unity wears down and the instrumental lines gradually go their own way, in the same way the 2012 student protest gradually lost momentum.
